How I Ran A Strong Marathon!

Gatorade Endurance

Happy Wednesday! Welcome to your regularly scheduled Wednesday post. I hope you’re having a lovely week so far. I’m still adjusting back to normal life and haven’t gotten around to running yet. I have spent some time on my Peloton and can’t wait to get back to weight lifting. Overall I’m feeling great and it’s all because of my awesome training. I wanted to share a bit about how I was able to run a strong marathon without any issues!

Now this is only my second marathon but I can definitely tell you that I crashed and burned on my first one. Everything was just awful and my training wasn’t that great. I briefly debated on getting a coach but I KNEW that I needed help. Being able to have Coach Kyle work with me to create an awesome training schedule and bounce ideas off of really helped. My plan was specifically for my needs and I was able to move stuff around if needed. However, I followed closely to all the prescribed runs unless my body was telling me to take a break. Getting out of my head and running by effort really helped me look inward and listen to my body. I quickly learned when to push and when to back off. One great thing that helped during marathon training is to practice as much as possible. What I mean by this is to treat each long run as race day. I began to watch what I eat the night before as well as the morning of. I was also blessed with the opportunity to practice with the hydration and fuel that would be on course at the Chicago Marathon. If you can do this, it would be very ideal! Gatorade sent me an awesome package full of goodies. I immediately began using the products in my workouts and my training runs.

Gatorade Endurance is specifically formulated for endurance athletes. Their Watermelon drink was SO GOOD! It’s very refreshing to sip on during a long run. Especially in these hot Texas mornings I trained in! The flavor wasn’t overpowering and it’s not jam packed with sugars so I had absolutely no stomach issues. I know my limits with what I can have while running and I didn’t have any issues at all. I also tried their Lemon Lime flavor and it was so yummy. I would even drink it on days where I would strength train because I go to an open air gym. When the sun is setting and the humidity is high, anything that helps me replace everything I sweat out is clutch!

I also had the opportunity to try the Energy Gels and Chews that were available on course. The fact that these are available on course is pretty handy because I almost had a snafu and lost my gels. Being able to practice with what will be available on race day is a great back up plan in case something happens! Their energy gels are great if you’re not a fan of the typical gel consistency. These are much thinner and their flavors are delicious! My favorite is the Apple Pear Energy Gel. It’s basically like a jolly rancher. I had no issue taking those while on the run. I don’t like to stop on my long runs so if it’s a gel that I can take easily and follow up with water, I’m sold!
