Gearing Up For Summer Base Training!

We are in the last week of April and the temps are working their way up. Summer in Texas is ROUGH so there aren’t many races happening for the next few months. There are a few but they’re usually not for the faint of heart. Since I don’t have a race on the calendar yet, I figure I can still improve on my running with some base training!

Why Base Training?

Since I’ve been doing CrossFit for the last few years, my body has changed. I still consider myself an endurance runner but that doesn’t mean I can just get up and run a marathon tomorrow. I’m heavier thanks to muscle and body recompositing but I am much stronger. Running just feels different and I want to get comfortable with my body as it is now.

Summer Training Plan

My plan is to work for the month of May and June to get some good miles in each week. This means I’ll have to move a few of my workouts each week to get these quality runs in. It will take some fine tuning but I’m sure I’ll be able to get the hang of it. I plan to use Hal Hidgon’s Spring Training Plan and I’ll be using Peloton classes to get the miles needed each week. I really want to stick to having one rest day a week to help me recover so I may have to do a few Two-A-Days but I think it will be manageable!

CrossFit and Strength Training will still be a key part of my workouts so I’m hoping this base training helps me become a stronger all around athlete! There are a few races in the fall that I’m hoping to run so I truly think having this plan will help me stay in shape. Having base miles will come in handy when I want to ramp up training for fall races!

That’s my plan for the next few months and I can’t wait to see how my body adapts to more miles!

Have you ever had a planned base training period?
