Choosing and Running Your First Race

My favorite time of year is around the corner! Now, Houston doesn’t real do seasons but fall/winter holidays are definitely my favorite. Pumpkin and Peppermint are added to absolutely everything and it’s okay to wear loud crazy colors!

Another thing that comes along with Thanksgiving and Christmas is fun runs and 5k races! These are definitely the best time to jump in and start running. Well, that and it might help keep the calories from adding up, haha!

When choosing your first race, I definitely steer people toward races like these. They are usually festive, fun for the whole family, and there’s not really any pressure. That’s ideal for when you are just getting started with running.

Ultimately, you want to start small. Pick something near your area and maybe a route that you’re familiar with. That way, you know where you are going and don’t worry about getting lost.

Also, get the whole family to participate! Maybe get your spouse to keep you accountable and you both sign up for a race. That way you have a training buddy and someone to share your finish with. If that’s not an option, you can still invite family and friends to see you accomplish your goal.

Let people know that you are training for a race. Whether it’s at work or on social media, by letting others know, you are holding yourself accountable as well. It’s a small step but sometimes it makes a big difference. And you’re also less likely to skip a workout if you know people are going to ask you about it!

Pick a training plan that will fit in your schedule and that you will stick to. Since you are just starting out, I would recommend a plan that allows you rest days during the week. You don’t want to go straight to running five days a week. If you need any suggestions, I can point you to a few or make you a customized running plan! Drop me a line here.

If it’s your first race, do a 5k just so you understand what goes into the race. Picking a fun run or festive race ensures that you will have an even crowd of those who are walking and enjoying themselves and those who are actually “racing” and trying to place. Starting in the middle of the corrals is the best bet because you will find your groove and don’t risk getting shoved out of the way.

If all possible, pick up your packet before race day. This way you are familiar with any special instructions. You can also opt to drive or walk the course so you are a bit less nervous on the morning of. Set out all your clothes the night before and everything you will need for your race. Set the alarm and make sure to get plenty of sleep!

On race day, don’t feel bad if you need to stop and take walking breaks. I would recommend taking walking breaks when you get to water stops. This way you can get your water and take sips without having to worry about getting it all over yourself. Also, avoid dressing too warm. The weather at the beginning of the race will feel different than that of when you finish. You will sweat and produce heat so be aware. Other than that, have fun! You’ve made it this far and you’ve trained for it!
