The Importance Of An Accountability Partner!

Accountability Partner

Happy Monday friends! This weekend seems to have just blown by! The next few weeks are going to be busy for me so I’m glad I had plenty of time to rest and relax this weekend. Today I wanted to share a bit on the importance of an accountability partner when it comes to fitness. We are all in different parts of our journeys but I think these reasons will apply to us all.

An accountability partner goes a bit farther than just a friend you workout with or your coach. These can be your accountability partner but the agreement and understanding has to be there by both parties. These are the people who know what your goals are and understand your plan to reach your goals. Accountability partners can be someone you text or meet in person but the idea is the same. You have given them special permission into that area of your life.

If you don’t have someone like this in your life, maybe it’s time to take a look around and see who can help you. These are three main ways that an accountability partner can help you.

They Motivate You

Accountability partners understand your goals. They can be athletes you look up to and they can motivate you in this manner. They can also help give you the pep talk you need to crush that hard workout. A good accountability partner will know what to tell you to set you up for a strong workout. If you are having a hard time getting out of your head, they can be the impartial party and show you the progress that you’ve made.

They’ll Call You Out

This kind of goes with the first point. By allowing this person permission to analyze this part of your life, they can also let you know when you are not putting in your full effort. I have women in my life that KNOW when I’m sandbagging. They’ll tell me (in their loving way) to cut the crap and get back out there. They know how hard you can push and should be allowed to tell you that they don’t believe you’re giving it your all. Personally, this is the best part of the accountability process for me. I can paint a picture that everything is fine but those who I trust can tell me otherwise.

They Keep You Honest

In the age of social media, it’s temping to say you ran a certain amount when you really didn’t. It’s easy to tell a fib when it comes to a workout to fit in with other people. However, knowing that you will have someone that will ask you specifically about your workout tends to be enough to keep you honest. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been wanting to quit speed work a few reps early. Truly, no one would know because I’m mostly on my own. However, I share my Garmin data with a friend and I can’t quite make up a lie on the missing reps. Having my accountability partner pushes me to dig deep and do the workout through the end.

Overall these are just a few reasons that accountability partners are important when it comes to fitness. You may not use this term for that person in your life but you probably already have someone like this.

Who is the person who keeps you honest and motivates you through workouts?
