If you’re anything like me as soon as the stress levels start to rise, I crave ALL THE SWEETS! Normally, I would say go for it and eat that cookie but sometimes, it’s just not ideal. These make and take energy balls are perfect for busy days when you’re running around town and still want to eat healthy. Make a batch of these energy balls on a Sunday and you’ll be set for the week. Well, that is if you can keep yourself from eating them in one sitting!

Who doesn’t love cookie dough? I don’t eat cookie dough by itself but it’s very tempting. However, this recipe makes it very easy to eat the whole bowl in one sitting. The great thing about this recipe is that you can eat it with whatever you’d like!

Weekend with all the Soreness

My week had a whole bunch of ups and down but I did know one thing. I was so SORE this weekend. I was very thankful for some couch time and some foam rolling.

Saturday

I started the morning with a short run. Jordan’s bike had a flat so I ran at the park instead of the trails. I felt like the heat and humidity made me slower. My quads were still on fire since I had tough workouts this week. So you can imagine my surprise when I finished my two miles and saw that I averaged an 8:44 pace. That’s pretty speedy for me so I was glad I pushed through and kept going!

I learned about a free yoga event held by a local spin and yoga studio. It was a free Power Flow classes outdoors. I figured I would stop by so after my run, I ate a quick breakfast and was on my way!

It was so nice doing yoga outdoors since the sun wasn’t right above us. Of course the sweat was pouring but because it was warm, I was able to stretch and get deeper into some poses. The practice was so good and the teacher even encouraged binds and gave us time to practice. I was so proud of myself because I was able to bind while working keeping my balance! There’s some days where I have my yoga act together, haha!

The event also had a live DJ providing the music and I thought that was pretty neat! I love events like these because it’s a chance to explore the community and meet others in the Houston fitness community.

After yoga, I cleaned up and we were off to do our errands for the day! Like I mentioned before, Jordan’s bike had a flat so we took it back to Bike Barn to get it looked at. While Jordan was with the mechanics, I was looking at all the energy gels. I didn’t take a picture but there were so many flavors! We may have to come back just so I can stock up for my long runs.

We stopped by the mall for a quick lunch and then we were on our way to get a mattress! Our bed was basically a hand me down and we’ve had it for years so it was time for a new one. It was definitely interesting trying to find a bed that firm enough for me and soft enough for him. Luckily we found one and they were able to get us delivery for Sunday! It was actually a pleasant experience. Jordan and I were joking around the whole time and there was a time where the salesman thought Jordan was actually asleep since he was splayed out on a mattress at one point!

Once we were all scheduled for the delivery, Jordan and I drove back home. We attempted to get Snowflake’s nails trimmed but it looks like she is due for her shots so we’d have to get her a vet appointment.

I made a homemade pizza and we watched Fury to end the day. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan of it. The acting is okay but the story was underwhelming. Plus it’s rated R and we just don’t watch too many movies like that.

Sunday

I woke up so SORE. Yoga was lovely but it opened up another can of soreness. My husband was wide awake and ready for a walk in the park. I, however, was moving at the speed of molasses. We got there however and I walked!

Goose update! We believe she’s still nesting but her little head was hidden and we didn’t want to disturb her. The other goose won’t leave the area and peck at anyone who gets too close. I hope people leave her alone and she’s able to keep her baby warm.

We had donuts for breakfast and headed home since we had to wait for our bed to be delivered. Unfortunately, the only time they had available meant we had to miss church but we stayed positive.

I got started on meal prep and laundry early since we were stuck waiting and we had everything done by 3pm! Once our bed arrived, we had Panera delivered and relaxed for a bit. We finally got off our butts and cleaned up a bit before we took our first nap on our bed. We both fell asleep within seconds and I could hardly wake Jordan up. It’s safe to say we got the right bed!

Overall, it was a lovely weekend and we did everything we needed to do! I’m excited for the week ahead since I’ll be seeing friends I haven’t seen in a while.

Friday Favorites: Skin Care Edition!

Friday’s are amazing for all the reasons. Friday’s are rest days for me so I get to sleep in. I usually treat myself to some awesome coffee in the mornings and most of my day is in meetings which makes the day go by quickly. Also, every Friday evening is date night! Keeping in the fun spirit of Friday, I decided to share a bit of my favorite skincare products today!

Skin Care Favorite #1

If you haven’t tried BB Cream, you are missing out! I wear a full face of make up to work every day. However, some days I’m running late or I’m just not in the mood for the full routine. That’s when I bring this baby out. Not only does it give me a full coverage throughout the day but it hides all my acne scars! It’s super lightweight so you can simply apply this in the morning and go on with your day.

Skin Care Favorite #2

As I mentioned before, I get the occasional break out and I have a few acne scars from when I was a teenager and I used to pick at my face. However, this scrub from Lush is AMAZING! Not only does it feel great to get everything off your face at the end of the day but it helps avoid blackheads and lightens up any scars. I really love how all Lush products are vegan and don’t contain any harsh chemicals.

Skin Care Favorite #3

I love Lush products so much that I’m sharing another one of my favorites! For some reason, I really love a good exfoliation session. This is a face mask which contains caffeine so it perks up your skin and leaves you feeling fresh. But what I love about it is that it contains little coffee grounds. When you wash it off, those grounds exfoliate your skin and gets rid off any leftover gunk from your day. I use it in the shower and use the grounds to exfoliate my neck and collarbone too. I’m low-key obsessed, haha!

Skin-Care Favorite #4

This is one is something I use every day. I really like it because not only does this provide a good level of moisture but it also contains sunscreen. Obviously, if you’re out in the sun a lot, you’ll need more protection but this serves as a good base. Aveeno also offers a tinted moisturizer which you can use on days you wish to skip the makeup. This moisturizer is also great for sensitive and acne prone skin!

Since I workout a lot and that means a lot of sweat, I want something that’s going to remove all my makeup easily so I don’t have to deal with clogged pores. I also have sensitive skin so I don’y like using products with a lot of weird chemicals. Not only is Simple good at make up removal, it’s gentle for use on all skin types and doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily. This is definitely a must for all skin types!

Must Have Fitness Favorites!

It’s been a while since I shared a few of my favorites products so I figured I would highlight a few of my fitness favorites! I know not everyone is up for having a big gym membership and it can be pretty intimidating attending classes in boutique studios. That being said, there’s no excuse for not working up a sweat at home!

With many free videos on YouTube and all kinds of workouts on Pinterest, it’s easy to find something to do to get your heart pumping and the sweat pouring. Here’s a few things I believe can help you get on your way to a good exercise routine.

Fitness Favorite #1: Ab Roller

This guy is cheap and will have your abs burning in seconds! You can work every inch of your abdominal by rolling this straight ahead or at an angle. Remembering to keep your hips low and your back straight will help you power through this exercise. The great thing about this is that it’s small and portable so you can take this anywhere!

Fitness Favorite #2: Exercise Ball

Having an exercise ball really helps take your workouts to another level! Doing normal sit ups and crunches on the ground is fine but to really work your stabilizer muscles, I would recommend giving them a try on the exercise ball. Once you’re feeling confident with sit ups, you can try doing push ups with your feet on the ball!

Fitness Favorite #3: Small Weights

Having a small set of weights at home is all around a good idea. You can get in a quick arm circuit if you have ten minutes. I even do a small workout while sitting on the couch with my small dumbbells. Don’t discount these weights just because they are small. You can get a good burn even with small weights at high repetitions. If you’re up for a challenge, you can use your weights along with your exercise ball.

Fitness Favorite #4: Resistance Bands

I don’t get any commission from this one but these are absolutely amazing. Resistance or “booty bands” are great because they come in all levels of resistances and the workouts are endless! I was given these for Christmas and I love incorporating these into my daily routine. You’ll receive three workout cards with this set and there’s plenty of videos online. If you buy only one thing on this list, I would buy these!

Fitness Favorite #5: Foam Roller

It looks painful but trust me, everyone needs a foam roller! I prefer the foam rollers with the trigger point bits so you really get into those sore muscles. Once you first starting getting active, you may be sore for a few days. Foam rolling will help get rid of that soreness quicker. Even after a long day of sitting at my desk, the foam roller feels amazing. Once you find that “hurts so good” sensation, you’ll know what I mean!

The Weekend With Friends!

Oh what a weekend it was! The week went by sort of quickly since I had Tuesday off for the holiday. I was definitely confused every day though!

Saturday

My pre-gym coffee was definitely needed Saturday morning!
I hit up the gym for an extra workout this week since they were having an event called Muscles and Mimosas! My friend Alyssa was coming to try out my F3 Crosstraining for the first time and I was very excited. We met through Tone It Up so our love language is basically working out together!

This past week has been Active Recovery Week at the gym so I was glad Alyssa was visiting when the workout wasn’t too intense. I wanted her to come back!

It was definitely nice to relax and chat after our workout. Alyssa also got to learn one of the fundamental lifts so it was really neat seeing her learn.

I’m definitely the mom of the group and I will be there to cheer you on during everything. If you ever need some cheering up, I’m your girl, haha!

Once I got home, I whipped up a thin crust pizza and Jordan and I devoured it while watching Night at the Museum. We recently cleaned our entertainment system and reorganized our movies so Jordan wants to re-watch a bunch of movies. 

After movies, we played board games. We kept hearing thunder and didn’t know if we would get caught in the rain so we just stayed inside. It was kind of nice to just relax and have one on one time with no technology.

Even though it can be a lot of work, I like to cook when I’m home. I felt pretty guilty last weekend when every meal was delivery or take out of some sort. I kind of cheated and bought the meat precooked but Jordan was obsessed with the pulled pork sliders I put together. It was easy and delicious!

Sunday

We woke up early enough for a nice walk at the park! So there’s a big pond at the park with so many ducks. However, there’s only four geese in the entire park. This week, we noticed that one goose is hidden behind a tree and hasn’t moved. On Sunday, it was still there! The other geese are always near by and get defensive when people walk too close. I think the geese is sitting on some eggs! We visit the park multiple times a week so we will keep an eye on her!

Picture this, I’m fully dressed and ready for church and I call the dog inside to be put up. She stays locked in the bedroom when we are not home. I called her from the back door and she would not come in. She looked at me and bolted. I wasn’t in the mood but I took off outside after her to try to corral her inside. However, instead of her usual run around once and then run inside, I see her running toward the corner of our yard over and over again.

I notice there’s birds dive bombing us too. Finally, I stopped chasing Snowflake and I walked toward the birds. A baby bird had fallen out of its nest! It had feathers and looked okay so Jordan and I opted to leave it alone. We finally caught Snowflake and ushered her inside. By the time we got back home from church, the family was gone so the little fly grew away!

I had to include this because I thought it was funny. My mom used to carry a big purse and she would have stash everything in it. She would sneak water bottles in places by shoving them in her purse. On Sunday I realised that I’m slowly becoming my mother because I did just that by shoving my drink in my purse to take it to church. Jordan gave me the side eye but I pretended not to see, haha!

After church, Jordan and I decided to go to the Heights for lunch. We ate at Tacos A Go Go and then took a short walk to Juiceland. I’ve been taking Jordan to a few of my favorite juice and smoothie places around town and this has become one of his favorites! I tried a Wheatgrass shot and followed it up with a juice called the Ninja Bachelor Party. It was a bunch of green so I felt that it made up for my indulgence. That’s how it works, right? 

The rest of the day was spent doing the usual Sunday chores of laundry, dishes, and meal prep. I’m ready for a full week ahead!

Favorite Running Songs!

Can you believe the weekend is already here? This 4th of July happening on a Tuesday thing had everyone mixed up. Coming back to work for only a few days then POOF! It’s the weekend again!

Today, I’d figure I would keep it light and share a few of my favorite running songs. I like to change up my playlists every few weeks and add songs and I find them as well. Even when I’m not training for a race in particular, it’s nice to have music to run with. These songs are good for any kind of workout too!

Feel the beat in your chest

I really love the heavy beat and fast tempo of this song. This song is great for speed work or when you’re just trying to get pumped up!

Symphony (Remix) – Clean Bandit 

This song has great intervals and it’s a good tempo for an easier run.

Stay – Zedd

There’s a theme with my songs here isn’t there? I like an electro/dance vibes with my workouts. Here’s a slower song without much of a heavy drop. I’d consider this a warm up song.

Believer – Imagine Dragons

I’ma say all the words inside my head
I’m fired up and tired of the way that things have been,

I’m not a big Imagine Dragons fan so I was surprised to find myself liking this song. I would consider this a good song to get yourself in the zone. Sometimes I like to throw in songs like this in the middle of my long runs so get back in focus.

I’m The One – DJ Khaled

Once I found out who did this song, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. However, it’s super catchy and upbeat so it works well with any workout. Also, there’s language if you’re not into that sort of thing.

Strip That Down – Liam Payne

Last but not least, here’s one from former One Direction, Liam. It’s poppy and a bit close to some of their later music. I would consider this a warm up or cool down song since it’s a bit slower.

Cryotherapy with The Athletic Room!

This past weekend I had the opportunity to finally try out cryotherapy.  I found The Athletic Room through a friend. Before that, I had been interested in cryotherapy but the selling point for me was the fact that they offered compression therapy as well. As soon as I learned about this, I booked an appointment for my husband and me!

Cryotherapy The Athletic RoomYou’ve probably seen football players and athletes standing in these super cold chambers. That’s basically what cryotherapy is. You’ll spend 2-3 minutes in a chamber that is cooled with nitrogen vapor. It’s completely safe and pain free. There’s different levels that they can set the machines to so they get as cold as you can stand.

During Cryotherapy, nitrogen vapor passes over your skin stimulating the cold sensors and prompting survival mode in your body. This response moves blood and other resources to your core organs. There blood is enriched with oxygen, collagen, erythrocytes and other nutrients. Once you exit the cryo chamber, the refreshed, nutrient-rich blood moves throughout your body, back into the skin, muscles and soft tissue. Other chemical responses, like the release of endorphins and adrenalin, create bursts of energy that can last for hours.

Athletes tend to favor cryotherapy because it promotes blood circulation and speeds up recovery. It’s interesting to note that the week before our session I had harder workouts and was pretty sore. Shortly after my session in the chamber, my soreness was reduced and the mobility in my arm (which I could hardly move beforehand) was DRASTICALLY improved. The best part of it is, you are literally in and out in about five minutes!

cryotherapy The Athletic RoomThe Athletic Room is set up as an open environment where you can walk in and get compression therapy, a stretch-mobility session, or cryotherapy. One thing to note is that you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from all this. We put our bodies through a lot of stress daily but I’m inclined to believe that sitting at a desk for the majority of the day leaves you feeling tight and sore. The Athletic Room recognizes this and welcomes people with all backgrounds. They work with you and try to find out which therapy will benefit you the most!

When Jordan and I arrived, we had a quick tour of the area and we were promptly seated in the lounge to receive our compression therapy. The NormaTec sleeves are very popular with professional runners and athletes alike. It basically delivers a pulsating air massage up and down your legs. Our session lasted for 20 minutes and it was great! By the time our session was up, my legs already felt less sore.

After compression, we were shown the Cryotheraphy chamber! Since we were the first ones to receive cryotherapy for the day, they had to prime the chamber for us. Jordan was the most nervous about it so the tech, Shane, explained that the first session of the day usually wasn’t as cold so Jordan should probably go first.

Cryotherapy The Athletic RoomWe were given some quick tips and we scurried into the changing rooms. There’s no metal allowed in the chamber so no jewelry and we basically stripped down to our underwear. They give you gloves and socks to protect them from the cold.

Cryotherapy The Athletic RoomOnce we changed, we went to the chamber in our robes and Jordan was the first to go! Shane made sure the chamber was at the right temperature (I believe he was around -30 degrees) and then opened the door for Jordan to get in. They place a cover on the top of the chamber so only your head is out the top. This is so all the nitrogen vapor stays in and you stay cold.

Cryotherapy The Athletic RoomJordan didn’t know what to expect but he really loved it! His three minutes went by pretty quickly and he was actually sad it was over. Of course, if you want to get out because it’s too cold, they can hit the button to stop the vapor from coming in and let you out. However, Jordan and I were both intent on finishing the three minutes. Once Jordan was out, the temperature kept dropping in the chamber. I was pretty nervous since I get pretty chilly in 60 degree weather and this stuff was COLD.

As soon as I was inside and my robe was off, I started shivering. Because Jordan was in the chamber previously, it was already cold and it was only getting colder. The temperature was about negative 40 and I was definitely shivering. I focused really hard on the music that was playing and moving around so I didn’t freeze too much. Once my three minutes were done, I got my robe on as fast as possible and ran out of there!

While it was pretty chilly, I do see why people like it so much. Like I mentioned before, most of my soreness was gone soon after. I believe it truly sped up my recovery and I really enjoyed it! Jordan already wants to go back. We felt amazing for the rest of the day and full of energy!

The Athletic Room is a great place for a hardcore athlete or a weekend warrior in the Houston area. They help you recover faster with many different therapies and can help you device a plan to help you achieve your goals. With easy online scheduling and drop in appointments, they take the hassle out of recovery. Their staff is very knowledgeable and will guide you through the process. The Productive Weekend Of The Summer!

Well, as most of my friends have an awesome four day weekend, I’m sulking in the corner because I DON’T! We have Tuesday off but we have to work Monday. How silly. Anyways! I’m happy either way because our weekend was productive and we FINALLY checked off a bunch of stuff off our to-do list around the house.

I tried to run but was too sore. We settled for a quick walk!

Saturday

Throughout the week, I heard about this amazing place in town offering Cryotherapy. I know there’s plenty of businesses in Houston that offer this service but a friend visited this specific location and had an awesome experience. Plus, they offered compression therapy with the Normatec boots! I’ve seen professional runners swear by these and I was super excited to have found a place where you could walk in and get the therapy without needed to have a referral or go through a physical therapist.

Jordan walks a lot at work and he has been complaining of stiffness in his calves and shins so I dragged him along. We chose to do the Compression Therapy and the Cryotherapy! I’ll have a full post up on this on Wednesday but it was such a blast. I really like trying out new things with Jordan and even though he was nervous at first, he really enjoyed it. He wants to go back soon!

After our session at The Athletic Room, we drove down the road to try a juice and smoothie place. I had seen this place as it was being built and I was curious to try it. Jordan normally doesn’t go for places like this but he was willing to try a smoothie that was mostly fruit, haha! You have to have ninja skills to get him to eat his greens sometimes!

We made a quick pit stop on the way home at Lowe’s to pick up some materials for our yard work. Our backyard is looking better each time we work on it but it seems like it’s never ending. Well, especially when you have a certain way you want it to look! Since we got home around 1 in the afternoon after all our adventures, we decided to relax a bit and wait for the sun to go down before starting the yard work.

It took us about two hours to tackle the back yard. My husband mowed while I moved my mom’s plant into a new planter. I have no idea what it is but we think it’s a shrub of some sort. I literally cannot grow anything but tomatoes so I’m hoping this little stick lasts a while! My job was ripping the vines off our back fence. The previous owner just let it grow wild and the tree trimmers only took off so much. It was a combination of hacking and pulling but I got most of it off. Unfortunately, I found out that it’s coming from our neighbor’s yard so I can’t dose it with fire and burn it to the ground. Kidding! It was very frustrating to say the least!

Sunday

For some strange reason my phone reset itself overnight so my alarm did not go off when I needed it to. Jordan and I went for a quick walk around the park but I wasn’t feeling too hot. After breakfast, we stayed home and worked around the house. Jordan cleaned the closet out and his mancave. While I worked on my blog and my computer. It was nice to finally take some time to get some work done. I had been putting it off way too long.

Jordan and I went out for lunch. We stopped at Lowe’s yet again for some more supplies. We were taking advantage of all the sunlight we had. Especially since the rain lately has been spontaneous.

What’s a Sunday afternoon without a nap? Jordan was sweet enough to let me nap for a glorious two hours. I’ve been so tired lately and I don’t understand. I’ll have to keep an eye on it because being tired all the time isn’t fun, y’all!

The second session of yard work was for the front yard. We have a big magnolia tree up front so we try to make our yard look put together. We’re the only house in the neighborhood that does their own yard work so the pressure is on!

We finished the evening with pizza and movie time. It was busy but fun! I love weekends like this. I’m ready to enjoy myself this week.

What If You Don’t Want To Workout?

This week has been weird for me. The rainy weather has been ruining my plans and with my father-in-law in the hospital, I’ve been a big ball of blah. In situations like this, I like to surround myself with people and activities that make me happy and keep my anxiety levels at bay. Lately, this has been easier said than done.

Monday morning was supposed to be an easy run around the neighborhood. No time or distance limit, just listen to my music and run. Normally, running makes me feel so dang happy and my heart is practically bursting with joy. But Monday? Running was the last thing I wanted to do. Since I was already wide awake (and I had to wash my hair anyways), I opted to stretch and do yoga. I even challenged myself to close my eyes during the whole video and just take vocal cues.
