Being Comfortable In Your Own Skin

Being Comfortable In Your Own Skin

In today’s world, it’s so easy to be bombarded by the media telling us what we should look like. Whether our hair is styled perfectly or if we’re wearing the hottest clothes (I’m still trying to find a romper that doesn’t make me look weird #truth). It’s harder than ever now that Facebook and Instagram have taken over our lives and we’re reminded of these images every day. We are constantly bombarded with the world’s idea of beauty. Here’s my opinion on finding joy and being comfortable in your own skin.

Being Comfortable In Your Own Skin

As I became more involved in social media in the past year, I noticed that there’s always a group of people who will tell you how to lose weight or how to gain weight.  Thin is in, thick thighs save lives, and quad goals are some of the phrases and hashtags I stumble upon DAILY. (Maybe I just need to follow a bunch of puppy pages?) How the heck am I supposed to be happy with myself?!

It took a lot of trial and error but for me, it came when I simply didn’t care. I used to workout as a way to “earn” my food. This way of thinking quickly spiraled out of control. Then I used to workout to “relieve stress” but that quickly turned obsessive as well. It wasn’t until I began to pray HARD and listen to my body that I honestly became comfortable with myself.

I get it, it’s hard for women to be happy with their appearance. However, you have to look inside for a moment. Is what you’re doing honestly making you happy? Are you dressing a certain way because you believe you are supposed to? I say this to my friends a lot, just do you boo-boo!

I run because it brings me so much joy. It sounds silly but honestly nothing makes me happier than ten miles on a Saturday morning with my husband riding his bike alongside me. Are there some mornings where I don’t want to run? Of course! And guess what, I don’t go run. I don’t feel bad about it AT ALL. I don’t restrict my food later in the day either. If I’m hungry, I’m going to eat! Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not eating cake and cookies all day long because honestly that makes me sick but I can put away a good portion of a cheesecake by myself.

What I’m trying to say is that, do what make your heart happy and soon you’ll be comfortable in your own skin. Look inward and if you’re of the praying type, I would recommend spending a moment to pray about your feelings. Acknowledge that what you are feeling is real whether it’s feeling like you’re inadequate or you’re not enough. Realize that those are lies. Then find what truly makes you happy. Whether that’s baking cookies, going on a stroll with your spouse, or chatting with your girlfriends. Fill your cup with what makes your heart burst as many times as possible. Soon, you’ll be so preoccupied with these feelings of joy that you will truly be comfortable in your own skin.

If you are a bare face Jane or a contouring queen, you are absolutely beautiful! Whether you prefer sky high stilettos or sneakers on the daily, you are absolutely beautiful. If you’re like me and wear leggings every day or you feel more comfortable in dresses, you are BEAUTIFUL! Do what makes your heart happy.

Now go show the world your beauty!
